Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder with pauses in breathing during sleep. Dental mandibular advancement devices (MADs) or mandibular repositioning appliances (MRAs) are oral devices that can help individuals with mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These devices work by repositioning the lower jaw and tongue to prevent airway obstruction. Unlike surgical interventions, dental appliances offer a less invasive option for sleep apnea management. Oftentimes, dental appliances are more comfortable and tolerable than CPAP machines. However, they may not be as effective for severe sleep apnea cases. If wearing a dental appliance, regular follow up visits with a dentist are crucial to ensure the device's effectiveness.
